Name Stylization Guidelines

Please refer to the guidelines below when stylizing names within subtitles. Thank you!

For Korean names
Romanize names using the Korean government Hangul romanization guide, unless specified otherwise. Stylize names with surname first, followed by given names with a space between each syllable, all capitalized, with no hyphens. Avoid using English nicknames unless instructed to do otherwise. On occasion, agencies and production companies may request that Viki make exceptions to these rules.

  • Examples
    • 김수현 is Kim Soo Hyun, not Kim Soo-hyun or Soo-hyun Kim.
    • 남궁민 is Namkoong Min, not Nam-koong Min or Nam Koong Min.
  • Exceptions: Some actors may have English names. If so, please use standard English name formatting in the order of given name followed by surname. Example: John Park

For Chinese names
Stylize names with surname first, followed by given names with a space between each syllable, all capitalized, with no hyphens

  • Example
    • 陈哲远 is Chen Zhe Yuan, not Zhe Yuan Chen or Chen Zheyuan.
  • Exceptions: Some actors may have English names. If so, please use standard English name formatting in the order of given name followed by surname. Example: Leo Wu, Wallace Chung.

For Japanese names
Stylize names with the given name first, followed by the surname with no spaces between syllables, all capitalized, with no hyphens.

  • Example: 西島 秀俊 is Hidetoshi Nishijima, not Nishijima Hidetoshi.

For Thai names
Stylize names with the given name first, followed by middle name (if provided), then surname with no spaces between syllables, all capitalized, with no hyphens. If an actor has a nickname, it may be used in front of their first name.

  • Example: Chanikarn Tangkabodee’s nickname is Prim, so she can be referred to as Prim Chanikarn Tangkabodee or Prim Chanikarn.

In general, names in subtitles should appear exactly as they do in the synopsis so everything is kept consistent. An exception would be if a character's name is spelled differently in the episodes. For those cases, please let Viki know by submitting a support ticket under "Content Issues".
