What is the Subtitle Editor?

The Subtitle Editor tool allows you to write and edit subtitles on Viki!

Important: You have to be added to a team as a Subtitler before you can create subtitles for a video.

Accessing the Subtitle Editor

To access the subtitle editor one can follow the steps below:

    1. Go to the Channel (Movie/Show/Drama) that you are contributing on
    2. Once you are here, there are two(2) ways you can use to access the Subtitle Editor.
First Way – (All Channels)
    1. Play the video that you will be subtitling.
    2. Click/Hover-over the gear icon located on the bottom right-hand corner.

    3. This will bring up the player menu to access the Subtitle information, tools, and more.
    4. Click the pencil icon to access the Subtitle Editor.

    5. You will now be on the Subtitle Editor page.
Second Way – (Channels with 2+ episodes)
    1. Click on the “Episodes” section of the channel.

    2. Look for the episode that you will be subtitling
    3. Hover over the video that you will be subtitling
    4. Click the pencil icon to access the Subtitle Editor.

    5. You will now be on the Subtitle Editor page.
 

Navigating the Subtitle Editor

Writing Subtitles

    1. On the right-hand side, select whether you'd like to subtitle or caption. If you select "Subtitle," choose the languages you would like to translate FROM and TO from the drop-down menus.

    2. In the boxes below, write or edit the subtitles (Note: These boxes each represent a segment, so if they do not appear yet, the video must be segmented in the Segment Timer)

    1. Navigation tabs: Use these buttons to navigate to the Subtitle Editor, Team Discussion, and Team Notes. Learn more about these here.
    2. Area to select "Subtitle" or "Caption", the "From" and "To" languages, subtitled percentage per virtual part.
    3. Find a list of shortcut keys, helpful tutorial videos, and an easy way to find the empty segment(s).
    4. The writable fields to write subtitles. Each box represents a segment
    5. Menu to move between parts of a video 
    6. Menu to move between episodes  

Extra Tips

    • Use Ctrl+F to find a word within all subtitles on a video.

    • Using the shortcut keys (such as “Tab” to move to the next subtitle) will help you subtitle more quickly, so make sure to check them out (located under the fields for "From" and "To" languages).


I'm new and don't know how to subtitle. Where do I learn?

You can learn how to subtitle on the Viki U Channel, which contains numerous tutorial videos and tips. More specifically, this video will show you how to subtitle.

Remember to always first contact the Channel Manager or Moderator of a video before you start working on it.
